Peer review worksheet for Paper 3

11 October 2006

On Monday, 16 October, you will need to bring your draft of Paper 3 to class for peer review. It may be helpful to bring multiple copies so that each reviewer can have a clean copy to mark. At least two classmates should review your paper; you will turn in your draft, along with each reviewers answers to the worksheet questions, when you submit your final paper on 23 October.

Download the peer review worksheet for Paper 3 here.

Assignment sheet for Paper 3

9 October 2006

Download the assignment sheet (pdf) for Paper 3 here.

Bring a draft of Paper 3 to class with you on Monday, 16 October, so that you can workshop your paper with classmates. Bringing multiple copies of your paper, while not required, may make it easier to process comments and markings by several reviewers. A peer review worksheet will be available for download here no later than Wednesday, 11 October.

When you turn your paper in on 23 October, please include the worshopped draft(s), along with the peer review worksheets from your classmates. You may attach these to your (stapled) paper with a paper clip.

Readings for Wednesday, 9/20

18 September 2006

Please download, print and read these essays from Harper’s Magazine; bring your printed copies to class so you can refer to them during class discussion. When you read the essays, pay special attention to the writers’ “angle of vision” (for more on “angle of vision,” see Chapter 4 in Allyn & Bacon). These essays were published together under the heading “On the uses of a liberal education.” So that you understand what is meant by “liberal education” (hint: we’re not talking about a political bent here), I suggest you read this short piece by Mortimer Adler, entitled “What is a Liberal Education,” before reading the Harper’s essays.

Edmundson, Mark. “As Lite Entertainment for Bored College Students.” Harper’s Magazine Sep. 1997: 39+.

Shorris, Earl. “As a Weapon in the Hands of the Restless Poor.” Harper’s Magazine Sep. 1997: 50+.

13 September 2006

Please download, print and read this essay by Wendell Berry. Pay close attention to how Berry explains both the problem he sees and the solution(s) he proposes. Please bring your print-out to class so you can refer to it during our discussion.
